    How it works

    Methodology & formulas

This calculator is transparent by design. Review the steps and formulas so you can trust the estimate and adjust assumptions when your dashboard differs.

    Calculation steps

    1. 1Sum all batch ingredients for batch cost.
    2. 2Divide by bars per batch for materials per bar.
    3. 3Calculate total batch labor and divide per bar.
    4. 4Add packaging and shipping per bar for landed cost.
    5. 5Solve retail price for target margin after fees.

    Formulas

    • ingredientsBatch = oils + lye + fragrance + color + additives
    • materialsPerBar = (ingredientsBatch + mold)/bars
    • laborPerBar = (minutes/60 × rate)/bars
    • landedPerBar = materialsPerBar + laborPerBar + pack + ship
    • retail = landed/(1-margin-fee%)+feeFixed

    Important assumptions

    • ingredientsPerBatch = oils + lye + fragrance + colorant + additives.
    • materialsPerBar = (ingredients + moldLiner) / barsPerBatch.
    • laborPerBar = (laborMinutes/60 × rate) / barsPerBatch.
    • totalPerBar = materialsPerBar + laborPerBar + pack + shipping.
    • Retail = totalPerBar / (1 - margin - fee%) + feeFixed.
    • Wholesale uses 25% margin.

    Worked example

    Cold process 10-bar batch

    Cold process 10 bars. Oils $12.50 + lye $1.25 + fragrance $4.00 + colorant $1.50 + additives $2.00 = $21.25 ingredients. +$0.75 mold = $22.00 batch. Per bar $2.20. Labor 60min × $20/hr = $20, per bar $2.00. +$0.60 pack + $4.50 ship = $9.30/bar. Retail at 50%+10%: $9.30/(1−0.5−0.1)+$0.30 = $23.55. Profit $11.78 (50%). Handmade soap typically sells $8-12 per bar — at $9.30 cost this is 0% margin. Suggest: raise price or reduce COGS.

Ingredients $12.50+$1.25+$4+$1.50+$2=$21.25 +$0.75 mold=$22 batch. /10=$2.20 per bar. Labor 60/60×$20=$20 /10=$2 per bar. Pack $0.60 ship $4.50 = $9.30 per bar landed. Denom 0.4. $9.30/0.4+$0.30=$23.55 retail. Fee $2.36+$0.30=$2.66. Profit $23.55-$9.30-$2.66=$11.59 ~49%. But market $10 retail = loss. To hit $10 retail need landed $3.88 at 50% margin: $3.88/(0.4)+$0.30=$10.00, so need reduce $5.42 cost via bundle shipping $2.17 vs $4.50 saves $2.33, larger batch saves $1.50, bulk oils $0.60. New landed ~$5.20, retail $13.30 closer. Bundle 3 for $30 solves it.
