How it works
Methodology & formulas
This calculator is transparent by design. Review the steps and formulas so you can trust the estimate and adjust assumptions when your dashboard differs.
Calculation steps
- 1Order revenue is calculated as (item sale price × quantity) + shipping charged to the buyer.
- 2Transaction fee uses your chosen percentage of order revenue.
- 3Payment processing fee uses your chosen percentage of order revenue plus the fixed fee.
- 4If offsite ads are enabled, that percentage is also applied to order revenue.
- 5Your costs combine product cost × quantity, actual shipping cost, and packaging.
- 6Net profit equals order revenue minus total fees minus your costs.
- 7Profit margin equals net profit divided by order revenue.
- 8Break-even sale price solves for the item price that brings net profit to zero while holding shipping charged, quantity, costs, and fee rates constant.
Formulas
- Order revenue = (sale price × quantity) + shipping charged
- Transaction fee = order revenue × transaction fee %
- Processing fee = (order revenue × processing %) + fixed processing fee
- Offsite ads fee = order revenue × offsite ads % (when enabled)
- Total fees = listing fee + transaction fee + processing fee + offsite ads fee
- Your costs = (product cost × quantity) + shipping cost + packaging
- Net profit = order revenue − total fees − your costs
- Profit margin = net profit ÷ order revenue
Important assumptions
- Default fee rates are configurable estimates commonly used by US Etsy sellers and may not match your shop, category, or country.
- Transaction and processing fees are applied to item total plus shipping charged to the buyer.
- Listing fee is counted once for this sale scenario (renewals and multi-quantity listing strategies can differ).
- Offsite ads fee is optional and only included when enabled.
- Taxes, currency conversion, deposits, subscriptions, and promotional tools are not included unless you add them into costs.
- Always verify live rates in your Etsy seller account before final pricing decisions.
Worked example
Handmade candle example
You sell one handmade candle for $28 with $4.50 shipping charged. Your product costs $8, shipping costs $3.75, and packaging costs $0.75. Offsite ads are off.
