    How it works

    Methodology & formulas

This calculator is transparent by design. Review the steps and formulas so you can trust the estimate and adjust assumptions when your dashboard differs.

    Calculation steps

    1. 1Order revenue is calculated as retail selling price multiplied by quantity.
    2. 2Payment fee is calculated as revenue times processing percent plus the fixed per-transaction fee.
    3. 3Platform or channel fee is calculated as revenue times the additional fee percent when provided.
    4. 4Total fees combine payment fees and platform fees.
    5. 5Your costs combine product cost times quantity plus shipping and packaging.
    6. 6Net profit equals revenue minus total fees minus your costs.
    7. 7Profit margin equals net profit divided by revenue.
    8. 8Break-even price solves for the retail price that makes net profit zero while holding quantity, costs, and fee rates constant.

    Formulas

    • Revenue = salePrice × quantity
    • Payment fee = (revenue × transactionFee%) + transactionFeeFixed
    • Platform fee = revenue × platformFee%
    • Total fees = payment fee + platform fee
    • Your costs = (productCost × quantity) + shippingCost + packagingCost
    • Net profit = revenue − totalFees − yourCosts
    • Profit margin = netProfit ÷ revenue × 100
    • Markup % = (salePrice − productCost) ÷ productCost × 100

    Important assumptions

    • Shopify Payments US default of 2.9% + $0.30 is used as an editable starting point. Rates vary by country, plan, and processor.
    • This calculation excludes the monthly Shopify subscription fee. Spread it across orders via fixed overhead if you want it included.
    • Shipping charged to the customer is not modeled separately. Revenue is based on product price only. If you charge shipping, add it to selling price or model it as negative cost.
    • Taxes, refunds, chargebacks, and currency conversion are not included.
    • Platform fee percent is optional and defaults to 0% for a clean Shopify Payments-only estimate.
    • Always verify live rates in Shopify and your payment processor before final pricing.

    Worked example

    Shopify t-shirt shop

You sell a printed tee for $39.99, one per order. Product costs $15, shipping you pay is $4.99, packaging is $1.50. Shopify Payments is 2.9% + $0.30, no extra channel fees.

Revenue is $39.99. Payment fees are about $1.46, your costs are $21.49, and net profit lands near $17.04 for a 42.6% margin. Break-even price is around $23.22, which leaves a $16 cushion for discounts or cost increases before the order stops being profitable.
