    How it works

    Methodology & formulas

This calculator is transparent by design. Review the steps and formulas so you can trust the estimate and adjust assumptions when your dashboard differs.

    Calculation steps

    1. 1Sum fixed monthly costs.
    2. 2Calculate transaction fee amount = sellingPrice × transactionFeePercent.
    3. 3Total variable per unit = productCost + shippingCost + transaction fee amount.
    4. 4Contribution per unit = selling price − variable per unit.
    5. 5If contribution is zero or negative, break-even is unattainable at this price.
    6. 6Break-even units = total fixed ÷ contribution per unit, ceiling rounded.
    7. 7Break-even revenue = break-even units × selling price.
    8. 8Daily targets divide monthly values by 30.

    Formulas

    • Fixed = plan + apps + marketing + other
    • Fee amount = sellingPrice × fee%
    • Variable per unit = productCost + shippingCost + feeAmount
    • Contribution = sellingPrice − variablePerUnit
    • Contribution margin = contribution ÷ sellingPrice ×100
    • Break-even units = fixed ÷ contribution (if contribution >0)
    • Break-even revenue = BE units × sellingPrice
    • Daily BE units = BE units ÷30

    Important assumptions

    • Total fixed = Shopify plan + app costs + marketing + other fixed.
    • Variable per unit = product cost + shipping cost + sellingPrice × transactionFee%.
    • Contribution per unit = selling price minus variable cost per unit.
    • Contribution margin = contribution ÷ selling price.
    • Break-even units = total fixed ÷ contribution per unit when contribution >0.
    • Break-even revenue = break-even units × selling price.
    • Daily target assumes 30 day month.

    Worked example

Store with $514 fixed, $39.99 price

    Plan $39, apps $75, marketing $300, other $100 = $514 fixed. Product $12, shipping $4.99, fee 2.9%, price $39.99.

    Fixed $514. Fee amount $1.16, variable $12+4.99+1.16=$18.15, contribution $21.84, margin 54.6%. Break-even units 24 (514÷21.84), break-even revenue $959.76, daily ~0.8 units or $31.99 revenue. At 100 units monthly you profit $1,670 after fixed.
