How it works
How the Shopify Revenue Calculator works
This calculator is transparent by design. Review the steps and formulas so you can trust the estimate and adjust assumptions when your dashboard differs.
Calculation steps
- 1Start with gross monthly revenue, average order value multiplied by monthly orders.
- 2Subtract average discounts from gross revenue.
- 3Subtract refunds from discounted revenue to get net revenue.
- 4Apply the editable transaction fee percentage to net revenue.
- 5Add the monthly Shopify subscription and app costs to get total Shopify costs.
- 6Subtract total Shopify costs from net revenue to show the modeled amount left after those Shopify costs.
- 7Multiply monthly revenue and the after-cost amount by 12 for annualized views.
Formulas
- Gross = AOV × monthlyOrders
- Discounts = gross × discount%
- Discounted = gross − discounts
- Refunds = discounted × refund%
- Net revenue = discounted − refunds
- Transaction fees = net revenue × fee%
- Total Shopify costs = transactionFees + subscription + apps
- Net profit = net revenue − totalShopifyCosts
- Annualized = monthly × 12
Important assumptions
- Gross monthly revenue uses average order value multiplied by monthly orders.
- Discounts are modeled as a percentage of gross revenue.
- Refunds are modeled as a percentage of discounted revenue.
- Net revenue is gross revenue after the modeled discounts and refunds.
- Transaction fees use an editable percentage of net revenue. This revenue model does not include a fixed per-order processor fee.
- Monthly Shopify subscription and app costs are added as recurring costs. Product costs, shipping, payroll, tax, advertising, and other operating costs are outside this calculator.
- Annualized values multiply monthly results by 12. Use store reports for a current baseline and update the assumptions as your mix changes.
