Shopify Discount Calculator

A 20% discount does not mean 20% less profit, it often means 40% to 70% less profit because fees and product costs stay fixed. Enter your regular price, discount percent, and true costs to see discounted price, new margin, profit drop, and how many more units you need to sell to match original earnings.

    How it works

    Methodology & formulas

This calculator is transparent by design. Review the steps and formulas so you can trust the estimate and adjust assumptions when your dashboard differs.

    Calculation steps

    1. 1Discount amount = regularPrice × discountPercent/100.
    2. 2Discounted price = regularPrice − discount amount.
    3. 3Regular fees = regularPrice × txn% + fixed.
    4. 4Discounted fees = discountedPrice × txn% + fixed.
    5. 5Total cost regular = product + shipping + packaging + regularFees.
    6. 6Regular profit = regularPrice − totalCostRegular.
    7. 7Discounted profit = discountedPrice − product − shipping − packaging − discountedFees.
    8. 8Profit drop = regularProfit − discountedProfit.
    9. 9Volume needed = ceil(regularProfit / discountedProfit) when discounted profit > 0, else 0.

    Formulas

    • DiscountAmount = regular × discount%
    • DiscountedPrice = regular − discountAmount
    • FeesRegular = regular × txn% + fixed
    • FeesDiscounted = discounted × txn% + fixed
    • ProfitRegular = regular − costs − feesRegular
    • ProfitDiscounted = discounted − costs − feesDiscounted
    • VolumeNeeded = regularProfit / discountedProfit

    Important assumptions

    • Discount is percent off regular price.
    • Product, shipping, and packaging costs stay the same after discount.
    • Payment fees recalculate on discounted price: fee = discountedPrice × txn% + fixed.
    • Only single-unit orders are modeled for clarity; scale quantity if needed.
    • Volume to match compares profit per order, not total monthly overhead.

    Worked example

    $40 with 20% off

    Regular $39.99, 20% discount, $15 product, $4.99 shipping, $1.50 packaging, 2.9% + $0.30.

Regular profit ~$17.04, discounted price $31.99, discounted profit ~$8.27, profit drop ~$8.77, new margin ~25.9%, need about 3 orders at sale price to beat 1 full-price order? Actually ratio ~2.06.
