    How it works

    Methodology & formulas

This calculator is transparent by design. Review the steps and formulas so you can trust the estimate and adjust assumptions when your dashboard differs.

    Calculation steps

    1. 1Total cost = investmentAmount + recurringCost × periodMonths.
    2. 2Net gain = returnAmount − total cost.
    3. 3ROI percent = net gain ÷ investmentAmount × 100.
    4. 4Annualized ROI = ROI percent × 12 ÷ periodMonths when period is provided.
    5. 5Payback months approximates when cumulative profit equals investment.
    6. 6Profit ratio = returnAmount ÷ investmentAmount.

    Formulas

    • Total cost = investment + (recurring × months)
    • Net gain = return − total cost
    • ROI % = netGain ÷ investment × 100
    • Annualized ROI = ROI % × 12 ÷ months
    • Return multiple = return ÷ investment

    Important assumptions

    • Net gain subtracts recurring monthly cost times period months from simple return minus investment.
    • Annualized ROI multiplies ROI by 12 divided by period months.
    • Payback estimate assumes profit accrues evenly over the period.
    • ROI does not include time value of money, taxes, or financing costs unless you add them.
    • Return multiple is total return divided by investment.

    Worked example

    Inventory investment

You invest $1,000 in inventory, it returns $1,500 over 6 months, no recurring cost. See ROI and payback.

Net gain is $500, ROI is 50%, annualized ROI is 100%, return multiple is 1.5x, and payback is about 4 months if profit accrues evenly.
