How it works
Methodology & formulas
This calculator is transparent by design. Review the steps and formulas so you can trust the estimate and adjust assumptions when your dashboard differs.
Calculation steps
- 1Determine annual contribution from frequency.
- 2Loop years: newValue = oldValue * (1 + growthRate) + annualContribution.
- 3Track cumulative contributions and growth gain.
- 4Growth multiple = finalValue / startingValue.
- 5Month 1 equivalent = annualGrowthRate * startingValue / 12 for quick sense-check.
Formulas
- annualContribution = perPeriod × (12 monthly / 4 quarterly / 1 annually / 0 none)
- value_year1 = startingValue × (1 + growthRate) + annualContribution
- finalValue = iterated over years
- totalContributions = annualContribution × years
- totalGrowth = finalValue - startingValue - totalContributions
- multiple = finalValue / startingValue
Important assumptions
- Growth compounds once per year as value * (1 + growthRate) + annualContribution.
- Contributions per year = period amount times 12 for monthly, 4 for quarterly, 1 for annually, 0 for none.
- Total contributions = contributionsPerYear times numberOfYears.
- Does not include taxes, fees, churn, or seasonality unless you model them in growth rate.
- Nominal values — no inflation adjustment unless you lower growth rate by expected inflation.
