    How it works

    Methodology & formulas

This calculator is transparent by design. Review the steps and formulas so you can trust the estimate and adjust assumptions when your dashboard differs.

    Calculation steps

    1. 1Build equation: targetProfit = targetMargin% × salePrice.
    2. 2Revenue = salePrice + shippingCharged.
    3. 3Fees = revenue × (transaction%+processing%)/100 + processingFixed + listingFee.
    4. 4Costs = productCost + packagingCost + actualShippingCost.
    5. 5Net profit = revenue − costs − fees.
    6. 6Set netProfit = targetMargin% × salePrice and solve for salePrice.
    7. 7Solve: minimumSalePrice = (costs + fixedFees + shippingCharged×rate − target%×shippingCharged) / (1 − rate − target%).
    8. 8Max discount = (regularPrice − minimumSalePrice)/regularPrice ×100.

    Formulas

    • rate = (txn%+proc%)/100
    • Revenue = salePrice + shippingCharged
    • Fees = revenue×rate + fixed + listing
    • Net = revenue − costs − fees
    • Target: Net = target% × salePrice
    • minSale = (costs+fixed+shipping×rate − target%×shipping)/(1−rate−target%)
    • maxDiscount = (regular − minSale)/regular ×100

    Important assumptions

    • Margin is defined as net profit divided by sale item price before shipping, matching how many sellers track item margin.
    • This solver uses: salePrice + shippingCharged - (productCost+packaging+shippingActual) - ((salePrice+shippingCharged)*(txn%+proc%)/100+fixed+listing) = targetMargin% × salePrice.
    • Shipping charged stays constant — only item price is discounted.
    • If solution is negative or below cost, max discount is capped logically and you should raise regular price or lower costs first.
    • Etsy fees apply to (salePrice + shippingCharged) per Etsy fee base.

    Worked example

    $29.99 item protecting 30% margin

Regular $29.99, costs $16.49 total, shipping charged $4.99, fees 9.5% + $0.45. Target floor 30% margin on item price.

Equation solves to minimum sale price about $24 to $25 depending on fee rounding. That allows about 17% max discount while holding 30% margin. Below that, margin drops under floor.
