    How it works

    Methodology & formulas

This calculator is transparent by design. Review the steps and formulas so you can trust the estimate and adjust assumptions when your dashboard differs.

    Calculation steps

    1. 1Sum yarn and notion costs including amortized pattern cost for true materials.
    2. 2Multiply hours by hourly rate for labor — crochet labor dominates cost.
    3. 3Add packaging and shipping for landed cost.
    4. 4Solve retail price algebraically to achieve target margin after percent and fixed platform fees.
    5. 5Show wholesale at 25% margin for boutique accounts.
    6. 6Compare landed to market ($35-65 amigurumi) to highlight underpricing risk.

    Formulas

    • materialsTotal = yarn + stuffing + eyes + notions + pattern
    • laborTotal = hours × rate
    • packShip = pack + ship
    • landed = materials + labor + packShip
    • retail = landed / (1 - margin - fee%) + feeFixed
    • wholesale = landed / (1 - 0.25 - fee%) + feeFixed
    • profit = retail - landed - fees

    Important assumptions

    • materialsTotal = yarnCost + stuffingCost + safetyEyesCost + notionCost + patternCostPerItem.
    • laborTotal = hoursToMake × hourlyLaborRate.
    • packagingAndShipping = packagingCost + shippingCost.
    • totalLanded = materialsTotal + laborTotal + packagingAndShipping.
    • Retail = landed / (1 - margin - fee%) + feeFixed.
    • Wholesale uses 25% margin with same fee formula.

    Worked example

Amigurumi bunny – the labor reality check

    Amigurumi bunny, $8.50 yarn, $1.50 stuffing, $0.75 safety eyes, $0.50 notions, $0.50 pattern = $11.75 materials. 4 hours × $18/hr = $72 labor. +$1.25 packaging + $5.50 shipping = $90.50 total landed. Target 45% margin + 10% Etsy fees.

Materials $11.75 + labor $72 + pack/ship $6.75 = $90.50 landed. Denominator 1-0.45-0.10=0.45. Retail $90.50/0.45+$0.30=$201.41. Market amigurumi sells $35-65, so labor unrealistic at full rate. To sell at $55, max cost = $55×(1-0.45-0.10)-$0.30=$24.45. With $11.75 materials + $6.75 pack/ship = $18.50, labor budget = $5.95 = 0.33hr at $18/hr. Conclusion: at 4 hours you underpay yourself. Price at $55 anyway = 14% margin ($7.70 profit) or reduce hours to 1.5hr via skill and price at $65 = 30% margin. This calculator forces the labor conversation.
