    How it works

    Methodology & formulas

This calculator is transparent by design. Review the steps and formulas so you can trust the estimate and adjust assumptions when your dashboard differs.

    Calculation steps

    1. 1Weekly gross = weeklyHours × hourlyRate.
    2. 2Monthly gross = weeklyGross × weeksPerMonth.
    3. 3Compute tier splits: tier1 = portion of monthlyGross that falls within lifetime 0-500 range, tier2 within 500-10,000, tier3 above 10,000.
    4. 4Upwork fee = tier1×20% + tier2×10% + tier3×5%.
    5. 5Monthly take-home = monthlyGross − upworkFee.
    6. 6Net monthly = takeHome − monthlyBusinessExpenses.
    7. 7Effective hourly = net monthly divided by (weeklyHours × weeksPerMonth) when hours >0.

    Formulas

    • WeeklyGross = weeklyHours × hourlyRate
    • MonthlyGross = weeklyGross × weeksPerMonth
    • Tier1 = min(500, lifetime+monthlyGross) − min(500, lifetime) floored at 0
    • Tier2 similar for 500-10000 band
    • Tier3 = remainder above 10000
    • Fee = tier1×20% + tier2×10% + tier3×5%
    • TakeHome = monthlyGross − fee
    • Net = takeHome − expenses
    • EffectiveHourly = net ÷ (hours×weeks)

    Important assumptions

    • Monthly gross equals hourly rate times weekly hours times weeks per month.
    • Fee tiers: 20% first $500 lifetime per client, 10% $500.01-$10,000, 5% above $10k.
    • Fee is calculated by splitting monthly gross across tiers based on lifetimeWithClients starting point.
    • If lifetime already above $10k, entire month is 5% fee.
    • Net monthly equals monthly take-home minus business expenses.

    Worked example

30 hours at $40, new clients

    30 weekly hours, $40 rate, 4 weeks, lifetime 0, $300 expenses.

    Weekly gross $1,200, monthly gross $4,800. Fee: first $500 at 20% $100, $4,300 at 10% $430, total $530, 11% effective. Take-home $4,270, minus $300 expenses net $3,970, effective hourly $33.08. Next month same hours fee drops to $480 take-home $4,320 net $4,020 hourly $33.50. At $10k+ lifetime, fee $240 net $4,560 hourly $38.
