    How it works

    Methodology & formulas

This calculator is transparent by design. Review the steps and formulas so you can trust the estimate and adjust assumptions when your dashboard differs.

    Calculation steps

    1. 1Total client lifetime becomes lifetime earnings plus contract amount.
    2. 2Upwork fee is calculated by applying tier rates: 20% on portion of contract that falls in first $500 bucket, 10% on portion that falls in $500.01-$10,000 bucket, 5% on portion above $10,000.
    3. 3Your take-home is contract amount minus Upwork fee.
    4. 4Net earnings is take-home minus business expenses.
    5. 5Estimated fee percent is Upwork fee divided by contract amount.

    Formulas

    • Lifetime total = lifetimeEarnings + contractAmount
    • Upwork fee = $ in 0-500 × 20% + $ in 500-10000 × 10% + $ above 10000 × 5%
    • Your take-home = contractAmount − upworkFee
    • Net earnings = takeHome − businessExpenses
    • Effective fee % = upworkFee ÷ contractAmount × 100

    Important assumptions

    • Upwork sliding fee is 20% on first $500 lifetime per client, 10% on $500.01-$10,000, 5% above $10,000. This applies to lifetime billings per client, not per contract alone.
    • Lifetime earnings entered is what you already billed this client before this contract. The fee for this contract depends on where it falls across tiers.
    • Upwork Connects, optional memberships, and withdrawal fees are not included in service fee; add them to business expenses if needed.
    • This models Upwork marketplace fee only, not payment processing or currency conversion, which are separate at withdrawal.
    • For new clients enter lifetime 0. For ongoing clients, enter lifetime to date to get accurate blended rate.

    Worked example

    New client $1,000 project

First project with new client, $1,000 contract, $0 lifetime, $50 expenses.

    Lifetime $0-$500 at 20% = $100, $500-$1000 at 10% = $50, total Upwork fee $150 (15% effective). Take-home $850, net earnings $800 after $50 expenses. Second $1,000 contract with same client would be 10% fee $100, take-home $900, net $850. After crossing $10,000 lifetime, future $1,000 contracts are 5% fee $50, take-home $950.
