    2. 2Upwork fee is calculated by applying tier rates: 20% on portion of contract that falls in first $500 bucket, 10% on portion that falls in $500.01-$10,000 bucket, 5% on portion above $10,000.
    3. 3Your take-home is contract amount minus Upwork fee.
    4. 4Net earnings is take-home minus business expenses.
    5. 5Estimated fee percent is Upwork fee divided by contract amount.

    Worked example

    New client $1,000 project

    First project with new client, $1,000 contract, $0 lifetime, $50 expenses.

    Lifetime $0-$500 at 20% = $100, $500-$1000 at 10% = $50, total Upwork fee $150 (15% effective). Take-home $850, net earnings $800 after $50 expenses. Second $1,000 contract with same client would be 10% fee $100, take-home $900, net $850. After crossing $10,000 lifetime, future $1,000 contracts are 5% fee $50, take-home $950.
