    How it works

    Methodology & formulas

This calculator is transparent by design. Review the steps and formulas so you can trust the estimate and adjust assumptions when your dashboard differs.

    Calculation steps

    1. 1Gross monthly revenue equals avgContractValue times contractsPerMonth.
    2. 2Per contract lifetimeBefore equals max(0, avgLifetimePerClient − avgContractValue).
    3. 3Per contract fee equals tiered calculation over that range.
    4. 4Monthly Upwork fee equals per-contract fee times contracts per month.
    5. 5Take-home equals gross minus monthly fee.
    6. 6Total expenses equal business expenses plus tools.
    7. 7Net monthly equals take-home minus total expenses.
    8. 8Effective fee percent equals monthly fee divided by gross monthly.

    Formulas

    • Gross = avgContractValue × contractsPerMonth
    • LifetimeBefore = max(0, avgLifetime − avgContractValue)
    • PerContractFee = tiered(LifetimeBefore, LifetimeBefore+avgContractValue)
    • MonthlyFee = perContractFee × contractsPerMonth
    • TakeHome = gross − monthlyFee
    • NetMonthly = takeHome − expenses
    • EffectiveFee% = monthlyFee ÷ gross × 100

    Important assumptions

    • Fee per contract uses lifetime per client range: fee = tiered(lifetimeBefore, lifetimeBefore + contractValue) where lifetimeBefore = avgLifetimePerClient − avgContractValue.
    • If avgLifetimePerClient is less than avgContractValue, lifetimeBefore floors at 0 and whole contract is evaluated from start of tiers, modeling new client.
    • Monthly Upwork fee equals fee per contract times contracts per month.
    • Sliding scale per Upwork: 20% 0-500, 10% 500.01-10,000, 5% above.
    • Annual projection multiplies this month's net by 12, not modeling client tier progression over year.

    Worked example

4 contracts at $500, mixed client lifetimes

Average contract $500, 4 per month, average lifetime per client $800 including new value, $300 biz + $100 tools.

Gross $2,000 monthly. Per contract lifetimeBefore = $300, so fee per $500 = $100 at 20% ($20) + $400 at 10% ($40) = $60 per contract. Monthly Upwork fee $240, take-home $1,760, expenses $400, net monthly $1,360, effective 12% fee, annual about $16,320. With all new clients fee would be $400 monthly and net $1,200; returning clients save $160 per month in this example.
