    How it works

    Methodology & formulas

This calculator is transparent by design. Review the steps and formulas so you can trust the estimate and adjust assumptions when your dashboard differs.

    Calculation steps

    1. 1Sum other costs as item+actualShip+pack+other
    2. 2Derive linear equation for profit in terms of price and shipCharged
    3. 3Solve for price that gives desired profit
    4. 4Calculate fees at that price
    5. 5Round up to nearest .99 dollar as suggested
    6. 6Calculate profit and margin at suggested

    Formulas

    • TotalCosts = item+actualShip+pack+other
    • Revenue = price+shipCharged
    • Fees = price×10% + (revenue×2.9%+$0.50)
    • Profit = revenue − fees − totalCosts
    • Solve: price = (totalCosts+profit+0.5 − shipCharged×0.971) ÷0.871
    • Suggested = ceil(minimum)−0.01

    Important assumptions

    • Mercari fees: sellingFee = price × 10%, paymentFee = (price+shippingCharged) × 2.9% + $0.50
    • Revenue = price + shippingCharged
    • Profit = revenue − fees − (item+actualShip+pack+other)
    • Solve for price: profit = price + shipCharged − 0.1×price − (price+shipCharged)×0.029 −0.5 − otherCostsSum
    • Simplify: profit = price×(1−0.1−0.029) + shipCharged×(1−0.029) −0.5 − otherCostsSum
    • So price = (otherCostsSum + profit +0.5 − shipCharged×0.971) ÷0.871

    Worked example

Want $12 profit, item $10 cost

Item cost $10, actual shipping $0, packaging $1, other $0, shipping charged $0, desired profit $12.

Total costs $11, price = (11+12+0.5)/0.871 = $26.98 minimum. Fees: selling $2.70 + payment $26.98×2.9%+$0.50=$1.28 total $3.98. Buyer pays $26.98, profit $26.98−$3.98−$11=$12 matches goal. Suggested $26.99, profit $12.01 margin 44.5%. If you charge $8 shipping, S=8, price=(11+12+0.5−8×0.971)/0.871=(23.5−7.768)/0.871=$18.06 minimum plus $8 shipping = $26.06 buyer total, fees $1.81+$1.26=$3.07, profit $26.06−$3.07−$11=$11.99 ~$12 slightly less buyer total than free shipping price but similar profit.
