How it works
Methodology & formulas
This calculator is transparent by design. Review the steps and formulas so you can trust the estimate and adjust assumptions when your dashboard differs.
Calculation steps
- 1In cost to price mode, markup amount equals product cost times markup percent divided by 100.
- 2Selling price equals product cost plus markup amount.
- 3Gross profit equals selling price minus product cost.
- 4Gross margin equals markup amount divided by selling price times 100.
- 5In price to cost mode, product cost equals selling price divided by one plus markup percent.
- 6All percent values are converted to decimals for math.
Formulas
- Markup amount = productCost × (markupPercent ÷ 100)
- Selling price = productCost + markupAmount (cost to price)
- Product cost = sellingPrice ÷ (1 + markupPercent ÷ 100) (price to cost)
- Gross profit = sellingPrice − productCost
- Gross margin % = markupAmount ÷ sellingPrice × 100
Important assumptions
- Markup is calculated on cost, margin is calculated on selling price.
- Cost to price mode assumes productCost is the true cost basis.
- Price to cost mode back-calculates cost from selling price and markup.
- No taxes, shipping charged, or channel fees are included unless you add them to cost.
- Negative markup is allowed for clearance modeling.
