Kickstarter Funding Goal Calculator

Most Kickstarter creators set a funding goal that covers just production, then get squeezed by fees and fulfillment. Kickstarter takes 5% of total pledged funds, plus payment processing around 3% + $0.20 per pledge. You also need to cover per-unit production and fulfillment. Enter your unit costs, backer count, pledge price, and desired profit to see the real funding goal — not just what you hope to raise, but what you need to raise to actually profit.

    How it works

    Methodology & formulas

This calculator is transparent by design. Review the steps and formulas so you can trust the estimate and adjust assumptions when your dashboard differs.

    Calculation steps

    1. 1Total production = productionCostPerUnit × expectedBackers
    2. 2Total fulfillment = fulfillmentCostPerUnit × expectedBackers
    3. 3Costs before fees = production + fulfillment + fixedCosts
    4. 4Fixed processing = processingFixed × backers
    5. 5Variable fee rate = platformFee% + processing%
    6. 6True funding goal = (costsBeforeFees + desiredProfit + fixedProcessing) / (1 - variableRate)
    7. 7Platform fee estimate = trueGoal × platform%
    8. 8Processing estimate = trueGoal × processing% + fixedProcessing
    9. 9Pledged at reward price = rewardPrice × backers
    10. 10Surplus = pledgedAtRewardPrice - trueFundingGoal

    Formulas

    • Production = perUnit × backers
    • Fulfillment = perUnit × backers
    • CostsBeforeFees = production+fulfillment+fixed
    • FixedProcessing = fixed × backers
    • TrueGoal = (costsBeforeFees+profit+fixedProcessing) / (1 - platform% - processing%)
    • Pledged = price × backers

    Important assumptions

    • Kickstarter charges 5% platform fee on total funds raised when campaign succeeds
    • Payment processing is separate, typically 3% to 5% + $0.20 per pledge (Stripe). Enter your actual rate from Kickstarter's fee page for your region
    • This calculator solves for trueFundingGoal = (totalProduction + totalFulfillment + fixedCosts + desiredProfit + fixedProcessing) / (1 - platform% - processing%)
    • Fixed processing is per-backer fixed fee times expected backers
    • Does not include taxes, failed pledges, shipping overages, stretch goals, or marketing spend — add those to fixed costs if needed

    Worked example

    Tabletop game with 300 backers

    Production $18, fulfillment $6, fixed $1200, 300 backers, reward $49, desired profit $2500, 5% platform + 3% + $0.20 processing

Production $5400, fulfillment $1800, costs before fees $8400. Fixed processing $60. Variable fee 8%. True goal = (8400+2500+60)/0.92=11913.04. Platform fee $595.65, processing $417.39, total fees $1013.04, pledged at $49 = $14700, surplus $2786.96 above goal which adds to profit. Without surplus, actual profit after fees if exactly $11913 raised: net =11913-8400-595.65-417.39=2500 profit target hit.
