How it works
Methodology & formulas
This calculator is transparent by design. Review the steps and formulas so you can trust the estimate and adjust assumptions when your dashboard differs.
Calculation steps
- 1Choose a generic selling route and enter your target.
- 2Combine platform, processor, payout, and refund percentages.
- 3Allocate monthly overhead across expected sales and add per-sale product costs.
- 4Solve price for target after-reserve take-home and margin.
- 5Test the current price with every deduction shown separately.
- 6Report effective after-reserve cost and a review message when assumptions are infeasible.
Formulas
- Overhead per sale = monthly overhead ÷ max(1, expected monthly sales)
- Variable factor = 1 − platform% − processor% − payout% − refund reserve%
- Fixed costs = platform fixed + processor fixed + payout fixed + creation + delivery + marketing + overhead allocation
- After-reserve result = [price × variable factor − fixed costs] × (1 − reserve rate)
- Price for take-home = [target + fixed costs × (1 − reserve)] ÷ [variable factor × (1 − reserve)]
- Price for margin = fixed costs × (1 − reserve) ÷ [variable factor × (1 − reserve) − target margin]
Important assumptions
- The platform commission and fixed fee are fully editable and start at zero. Digital-product routes have different terms, so the calculator does not choose a universal marketplace rate.
- Processor defaults start at an illustrative 2.9% plus $0.30 context. Replace them with your current payment terms.
- Monthly overhead is allocated across expected monthly sales. Creation, delivery, and marketing are per-sale costs, while refund reserve is a percentage holdback.
- Target take-home and margin are after the entered tax or VAT reserve. The reserve is cash planning, not a tax calculation.
- If variable deductions consume all price or leave less than the requested margin, the review status explains why no finite solution exists.
