    How it works

    Methodology & formulas

This calculator is transparent by design. Review the steps and formulas so you can trust the estimate and adjust assumptions when your dashboard differs.

    Calculation steps

    1. 1Monetized views equal total views times monetized percent.
    2. 2Ad revenue equals monetized views divided by 1,000 times RPM as entered.
    3. 3Creator share equals ad revenue times creator percentage divided by 100.
    4. 4Total revenue equals creator share plus sponsorship plus other revenue.
    5. 5Estimated CPM is ad revenue divided by monetized views times 1,000.
    6. 6Chart shows creator ad earnings, sponsorship, and other revenue, filtering out zero slices.

    Formulas

    • Monetized views = totalViews × monetized%
    • Ad revenue = (monetizedViews ÷ 1000) × RPM
    • Creator share = adRevenue × creatorShare%
    • Total revenue = creatorShare + sponsorship + otherRevenue
    • Effective CPM = adRevenue ÷ monetizedViews × 1000

    Important assumptions

    • RPM is revenue per 1,000 views after YouTube share, typically $1-$10. Finance and education niches often $8+, gaming and entertainment $1-$4.
    • Monetized playback percent is share of views with at least one ad shown, typically 70-95% for long-form eligible content.
    • YouTube keeps 45% of ad revenue, creator keeps 55% for standard Partner Program. This calculator allows 55% default but keeps it editable.
    • CPM vs RPM: CPM is advertiser cost per 1,000 impressions before YouTube cut, RPM is creator revenue per 1,000 views after cut. RPM is what matters for forecasting take-home.
    • Sponsorship and other income like memberships, Super Chat, and merch shelf are added on top and not subject to YouTube ad split.
    • Shorts revenue uses different pool model and usually much lower RPM $0.02-$0.10, not this standard long-form model.

    Worked example

    Tech channel 50k views month

    10,000 views, 85% monetized, $3.50 RPM, 55% creator share, $200 sponsorship, $50 other.

Monetized views 8,500. Ad revenue $29.75, creator share $16.36, total revenue $16.36 without sponsorships, effective CPM $3.50. At 100k views same rates, ad earnings $163.63 per month. Add $500 sponsorship and total becomes $663.63, showing sponsorships quickly outpace small channel ad revenue.
