How it works
Methodology & formulas
This calculator is transparent by design. Review the steps and formulas so you can trust the estimate and adjust assumptions when your dashboard differs.
Calculation steps
- 1GrossRevenue = salePrice × salesPerMonth.
- 2PlatformFee and ProcessingFee follow their visible percentage and fixed inputs.
- 3ServiceFees = GrossRevenue × (BackOffice% + conversion% + optional service%) + optional cost per sale × sales.
- 4RefundReserve = GrossRevenue × refundReservePercent.
- 5OperatingCosts = marketingMonthly + otherOperatingCosts.
- 6NetProfit = GrossRevenue − platform − processing − services − reserve − plan cost − operating costs.
- 7BreakEvenSales = (plan cost + operating costs) ÷ contribution per sale when contribution is positive.
Formulas
- Revenue = price × sales
- Processing = revenue × processing% + fixed × sales
- Services = revenue × (BackOffice% + conversion% + optional%) + optional fixed × sales
- Reserve = revenue × reserve%
- Profit = revenue − all fees − reserve − plan − operating costs
- Break-even sales = fixed costs ÷ (price − variable cost per sale)
Important assumptions
- Starter uses a 7.5% base platform-fee starting assumption. Builder, Growth, and Custom use 0% base platform fee starting assumptions in the researched model. Processing is separate in every case.
- Plan prices, processing, BackOffice, currency conversion, affiliate costs, and custom gateway fees are editable starting assumptions, not guarantees.
- BackOffice is optional. Test an allowance around 2% to 2.8% only when it applies to your agreement.
- Refund reserve is a planning allowance. It does not claim that a particular Teachable or gateway fee is returned or retained on refunds.
- Taxes collected or handled on behalf of students are not creator profit or income-tax expense. Enter only creator-controlled costs here.
- Break-even sales use contribution after variable fees and reserve, before the plan and fixed operating costs.
