How it works
Methodology & formulas
This calculator is transparent by design. Review the steps and formulas so you can trust the estimate and adjust assumptions when your dashboard differs.
Calculation steps
- 1Calculate gross product sales and subtract discounts.
- 2Estimate order count from units and average items per order, then apply first-item and additional-item SPOD shipping.
- 3Add SPOD product cost and any editable provider-fee scenario to find total provider cost.
- 4Calculate storefront and payment costs on product sales collected plus buyer-paid shipping.
- 5Add reserve, marketing spend, and fixed monthly store cost.
- 6Net profit equals amount charged to buyers minus total modeled costs.
- 7Break-even units divide scenario-level marketing and store costs by contribution per unit and round up.
Formulas
- Orders = ceiling(units sold ÷ average items per order)
- SPOD shipping = orders × first-item shipping + (units − orders) × additional shipping
- Amount charged = gross sales − discounts + collected shipping
- Total provider cost = base cost × units + SPOD shipping + provider fee
- Net profit = amount charged − provider cost − store/payment − reserve − marketing − fixed store cost
- Break-even units = (marketing spend + fixed store cost) ÷ contribution per unit
Important assumptions
- SPOD is modeled as a fulfillment provider. The provider-fee input starts at 0%, while product base cost and shipping remain the main SPOD cost inputs.
- The $7.85 base, $3.57 first-item shipping, and $1.50 additional-item shipping values are illustrative basic-tee planning defaults only.
- Orders are estimated by rounding units divided by average items per order up. Shipping uses one first-item charge per modeled order and additional-item charges for the remaining units.
- Discounts reduce product sales collected. The reserve is a percentage allowance for refunds or replacements, and marketing plus fixed store cost are scenario-level costs.
- Storefront, marketplace, payment, advertising, tax, and currency terms are separate from SPOD and should be replaced with your current values.
