How it works
Methodology & formulas
This calculator is transparent by design. Review the steps and formulas so you can trust the estimate and adjust assumptions when your dashboard differs.
Calculation steps
- 1Start with project or invoice revenue.
- 2Apply the editable client-acquisition commission.
- 3Calculate payment processing as a separate rate plus fixed fee.
- 4Add payout or FX and proposal or lead allocation.
- 5Subtract freelancer-side costs to show net revenue before business expenses.
- 6Report the effective cost rate and keep the client source generic.
Formulas
- Acquisition commission = project revenue × acquisition commission%
- Processing = project revenue × processor% + processor fixed fee
- Payout or FX = project revenue × payout or FX% + fixed payout cost
- Net revenue before expenses = project revenue − acquisition − processing − payout or FX − proposal and lead cost
- Effective cost rate = freelancer-side costs ÷ project revenue × 100
Important assumptions
- This is a platform-agnostic planning calculator. The acquisition commission is editable and starts at zero because direct, marketplace, referral, and repeat-client arrangements differ.
- Payment processing is modeled separately from client acquisition. The default 2.9% plus $0.30 is an illustrative editable processor context, not a universal freelancer term.
- Payout or FX costs are external assumptions. Copy the rate and fixed charge from your bank, processor, currency, or payout route.
- Proposal and lead cost is an allocation for winning the project. It is included in net revenue before business expenses so acquisition effort does not disappear from the picture.
- Net revenue before business expenses is not profit. Delivery costs, subcontractors, software, overhead, refunds, and tax belong in the pricing or profit views.

Worked example
A $1,000 marketplace project
A marketplace project invoices $1,000 with an editable 10% client-acquisition commission, processing at the illustrative 2.9% plus $0.30, payout or FX at 0.5% plus $2, and $25 of proposal and lead allocation.
