    How it works

    Methodology & formulas

This calculator is transparent by design. Review the steps and formulas so you can trust the estimate and adjust assumptions when your dashboard differs.

    Calculation steps

    1. 1True cost per order = actualPostageCost + packagingMaterials + insuranceCost.
    2. 2Shipping P&L per paid order = shippingCharged minus true cost per order.
    3. 3Free orders = round(avgMonthlyOrders × freeShippingPercent / 100).
    4. 4Paid orders = avgMonthlyOrders minus freeOrders.
    5. 5Free shipping monthly cost = freeOrders × true cost per order.
    6. 6Paid shipping revenue = paidOrders × shippingCharged.
    7. 7Paid shipping cost = paidOrders × true cost per order.
    8. 8Net monthly = paidRevenue − freeCost − paidCost.
    9. 9Effective cost per order = abs(netMonthly) ÷ avgMonthlyOrders.

    Formulas

    • True cost = postage + packaging + insurance
    • P&L per paid = charged − true cost
    • Free orders = avgOrders × free% ÷ 100
    • Free cost = freeOrders × true cost
    • Paid revenue = paidOrders × charged
    • Net monthly = paidRevenue − freeCost − paidOrders×true cost
    • Effective cost per order = abs(netMonthly) ÷ avgOrders

    Important assumptions

    • Shipping cost per order equals postage plus packaging materials plus insurance/signature.
    • Paid orders count equals total monthly orders minus free shipping share.
    • Free shipping orders generate no shipping revenue but still incur full shipping cost.
    • Net monthly shipping equals paid shipping profit minus free shipping cost.
    • Effective cost per order shows magnitude of shipping economics spread across all orders.
    • This does not include eBay fee impact on shipping charged, which is modeled in profit calculator.

    Worked example

    Mixed free and flat shipping

Charge $4.99 flat when not free, postage $5.25, packaging $0.75, insurance $0, 15% free, 50 orders per month.

True cost $6.00 per order, loss $1.01 per paid order. Free orders ~8 costing $48, paid 42 generate $209.58 revenue vs $252 cost, net monthly about -$90.42, effective cost about $1.81 per order.
